I just got Jolly Roger back from the dealership. He’s in semi-tip-top shape, as curiosity got the better of me and I foolish/smartly asked “what else did you find wrong” and “anything else that needs to be replaced every X miles”.
So I now have a laundry list of to-do items to get fixed. Spark plugs are easy, but the transmission fluid (or whatever you call it) needs to be done.
Hey, it’s the first car I’ve ever owned and maintained, and I’m finding out its expensive in general, :/.
I also got the timing belt, which is what snapped and messed up my car. I'll leave that for another post though.

how many miles has it run on the original belt?
also, better flush the trans fluid asap, who knows how long its run.

The terms Chrysler and timing chain are more frightening than Satan and Saddam

I had a ‘94 Shadow 2.5L leave me stranded due to snapped timing belt. I know that feel.

No idea, but it’s been the same belt since 36k, and it’s at 102k now. The thing literally snapped.
I had family pay for the cost since i couldn’t afford it, the flush is too much as is. We just spent our extra money conveying to natural gas. :/

I have a 2.7 in mine. The water pump tried to fail once but it didn’t. I’m only at 81k miles so I have some 30 to go before I need to get worried.

Transmission fluid is a straight drain then fill job. I’ve always heard flushing isn’t a good idea, it dislodges junk that’s been out of the way for some time. Do some research and you might be able to DIY. Your biggest obstacle would be refilling the fluid. I didn’t do it on my civic because I needed a “syringe” tool to refill the fluid through a hold on the side of the transmission, I was able to do my TL because the filler hole was on top.

It’s a 2.7L. You have 81,000 miles on it, and you have about 30 miles to go before you need to
get worried
sell it.

I have the PT service manual as a pdf if you want to see how to do things like change the trans fluid etc.

There’s two schools of thought on the trans flush, those who do and those who don’t. I am skeptical of trans flushes and fall into the don’t do it category. The theory is that it loosens up all the crap in there and you actually increase your risk of problems down the road. I’d just drain what you can and replace it.

Drain and replace is the best option. Yes.

Service life on that belt is like 105k miles. Stupid interference engines. Were all the valves bent? Any pistons damaged? A busted timing belt in one of those is easily a repair cost of more than the car is worth, especially having a dealer do it. No fun for anyone.

Well, the guy said every 60k miles it should be done, and I've never done it, since I got the car with 36k miles...and it's now at 102k miles....so miracle?

It was at 102k miles that it went. The Pt has a non-interference engine, so the engine was still good. The belt just destroyed everything nearby it, :/. There’s suppose to be a plastic cover over the belt, that was ripped off.

Non interference in the PT? Which one do you have? All I knew was they had Neon motors, the 2.4T and another 2.4 option.

They all has the same engine that I'm aware of.
